What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? | the gentle art...
Jiu-Jitsu is one of the fastest growing martial arts in the world. Unlike traditional martial arts, Jiu-Jitsu is in a constant state of evolution so its techniques become more effective over time. Unlike rigid, traditional martial arts, students have the freedom to explore and modify techniques to find what works best for them.
Jiu-Jitsu is also a complete martial art. It encompasses a standing game, a ground game, and the transition between them. Rather than using strikes and kicks, students use chokes and joint locks to finish confrontations. That allows a level of control that makes training safe for all of the family.
Modern Jiu-Jitsu incorporates many variations, including self-defence, gi and no-gi competition, and as a complimentary style for other martial arts (such as Mixed Martial Arts or MMA). Regardless the reason for training, the same underlying principle is used: defend—control—finish.
We've added some links to YouTube clips about Jiu-Jitsu in the Resources section if you'd like to know more.
myBJJ New Zealand | about our national team...
myBJJ New Zealand began with humble origins in Dunedin, New Zealand. We're proud to have been part of the evolution of Jiu-Jitsu in New Zealand since its earliest days. Currently, we have three main branches. Professor Stuart Marks, our longest training student and first Black Belt, runs the Nelson academy. Professor Philip Lindsay runs the original Dunedin venue, while Professor James Cherrie runs our newest academy in Whangarei. Our instructors visit our Australian headquarters to continue their training.
myBrazilian Jiu-Jitsu International Association | about our global team...
myBJJ New Zealand is proud to be part of myBrazilian Jiu-Jitsu International Association, based in Sydney, Australia. This global organisation has affiliates in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and the United States. Our team's head instructor is Professor Mario Yokoyama, a Ryan Gracie Black Belt from Brazil. Our lineage can be traced back to the founders of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Although we're a small team, our atheletes stand head to head against the world's best, and we're always on the podium in the Asia-Pacific competitions.
